Using a condom correctly is essential to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Here is a step-by-step guide on how to use a condom:
- Check the condom packet for damage, the expiration date, and quality marks like the CE or BSI Kitemark.
- Open the packet carefully using your fingers, avoiding teeth, nails, or jewelry that might tear the condom.
- Make sure the penis is fully erect before putting on the condom.
- If uncircumcised, pull back the foreskin before placing the condom.
- Hold the tip of the condom to squeeze out any air, creating room for semen and to reduce the risk of breakage.
- Place the condom on the tip of the penis with the rolled side out.
- Unroll the condom all the way down to the base of the penis.
- Use water-based or silicone-based lubricant on the outside of the condom as needed; do not use oil-based lubricants as they can weaken latex.
- During sex, if the condom slips or breaks, stop immediately and use a new one.
- After ejaculation, hold the base of the condom while withdrawing the penis to prevent it from slipping off.
- Carefully remove the condom and dispose of it in the trash (not the toilet).
- Use a new condom for every act of sex.
Avoid using two condoms at the same time as friction can cause breakage. Also, never reuse a condom or use an expired condom. Proper use lowers the chance of condom failure such as breaking or slipping off significantly.
