There are three main ways to turn off the camera sound on an iPhone:
- Flip the Ring/Silent switch (or use the Action button on newer models) on the side of the iPhone to Silent mode. This will mute the camera shutter sound as well as other notification sounds.
- Turn on Live Photos in the Camera app. When Live Photos is enabled, the camera takes a mini video and the shutter sound is disabled. You can toggle the Live Photo button (series of white or yellow circles) at the top of the Camera screen to turn it on.
- Lower the volume to zero using the volume buttons or the Control Center before taking a photo. If the volume is muted, the camera sound will not be heard.
Additional notes:
- The Ring/Silent switch is the easiest and most reliable way to mute the shutter sound.
- Some regions may not allow the camera sound to be disabled due to legal requirements.
- Live Photos takes more storage because it records a short video with each photo.
To summarize the steps: Flip the silent switch, or enable Live Photos, or mute the volume before snapping a photo to take pictures silently on an iPhone.
