To transfer a car title in Georgia, follow these steps:

Complete the Title Assignment
The seller must fill out the title assignment on the back of the Georgia Certificate of Title using blue or black ink. This includes:- Purchaser’s full legal name as on their Georgia ID or driver’s license
- Purchaser’s current address
- Date of sale
- Odometer reading at the time of sale (in miles)
- Seller’s printed name and signature (all owners must sign if jointly owned)
- Buyer’s printed name and signature (all buyers must sign if jointly owned)
Any alterations or erasures may void the title
- Remove License Plates
The seller must remove the license plates at the time of sale. Plates can be kept, surrendered, or transferred to another vehicle

Prepare Required Documents for the Buyer
The buyer needs to take the signed title and the following to the local county tag office:- Completed MV-1 Title/Tag Application form
- Proof of Georgia liability insurance
- Valid Georgia driver’s license or ID
- Proof of emissions inspection if applicable
- Payment for fees and taxes (Title transfer fee $18, registration fees starting at $20, and Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) based on sale price)
- Visit County Tag Office to Finalize Transfer
The buyer must register the vehicle in their name at the county tag office. The office will process the title transfer, collect fees and taxes, issue a temporary tag if needed, and mail the new title to the buyer
Additional Notes:
- Vehicles 1985 and older may not require a title; a bill of sale and registration may suffice
- If the vehicle was purchased out-of-state, the buyer must submit the out-of-state title properly assigned, MV-1 form, proof of insurance, and pay applicable fees at the county tag office
This process ensures the legal transfer of ownership and registration of the vehicle in Georgia.
