To tame a cat in Minecraft, follow these steps:
- Find a cat: Cats spawn in villages and swamp huts as strays. You can find them wandering around in these locations.
- Get raw fish: You need either raw cod or raw salmon to tame a cat. These can be obtained by fishing or killing fish in water bodies.
- Approach carefully: Cats are easily scared and will run away if you move too quickly. Crouch (sneak) and slowly move towards the cat to avoid startling it.
- Feed the cat: When close enough, feed the cat raw cod or raw salmon by right-clicking (or the equivalent action on your platform). You may need to feed the cat multiple fish (1 to 10 or more) until hearts appear above its head, indicating it is tamed.
- Cat behavior after taming: Once tamed, the cat will follow you and can teleport to you if you move far away. You can make the cat sit by right-clicking it, which keeps it in place. Cats can also be bred by feeding two tamed cats raw fish to produce kittens.
- Additional tips: Cats will sometimes sit on furniture like chests or beds, which can interfere with usage. You can lure them away with fish or gently push them. Tamed cats also scare away creepers, making them useful companions.
This process works in all Minecraft editions (Java, Bedrock, Pocket Edition) and versions from 1.17 onwards
