To slow motion a video on your iPhone, you have two main approaches: recording directly in slow motion or converting a normal video to slow motion afterward.
Recording Slow Motion Video on iPhone
- Open the Camera app on your iPhone.
- Swipe to select "Slo-mo" mode from the camera options.
- (Optional) To set the frame rate for better slow-motion quality, go to Settings > Camera > Record Slo-mo, and choose a frame rate like 120fps or 240fps depending on your iPhone model. Higher FPS results in smoother slow motion but larger file sizes.
- Compose your shot and tap the red record button to start recording.
- Tap the stop button when finished. Your video will now play in slow motion where recorded
Editing or Adjusting Slow Motion in Recorded Videos
- Open the Photos app and select your slow-motion video.
- Tap Edit.
- Below the video timeline, drag the two larger white vertical bars to adjust where the slow-motion effect starts and ends.
- To remove slow motion entirely, move both bars to the end.
- Tap Done to save changes
Converting a Normal Video to Slow Motion Using iMovie
If you have a regular video you want to slow down:
- Open the iMovie app (free from App Store if not installed).
- Tap Start new project > Movie and select your video.
- Tap the clip in the timeline, then tap the speedometer icon.
- Drag the speed slider left to slow down the video (down to 1/8 speed).
- Preview the video, then tap Done.
- Tap the share icon and select Save Video to export it back to your Camera Roll
Additional Notes
- Newer iPhones (like iPhone 8 and later) can shoot slow motion at 240fps for ultra-smooth slow motion.
- The latest iPhone 16 Pro supports 4K slow-motion video with excellent quality.
- Slowing down video also slows audio, which may affect sound quality.
- For more advanced slow-motion editing or converting normal videos without quality loss, third-party apps or Adobe Express online tools can be used
This way, you can either capture moments in slow motion directly or transform existing videos into slow motion on your iPhone.
