To put an iPhone on silent, the method depends on the iPhone model: For iPhone models up to iPhone 14 and earlier:
- Use the physical Ring/Silent switch located on the left side of the iPhone above the volume buttons.
- Flip the switch towards the back of the phone to turn on Silent mode (an orange line will be visible).
- Flip the switch towards the front to turn Silent mode off (ringer mode on).
For newer iPhones (iPhone 15, iPhone 16, and later) with an Action Button instead of the silent switch:
- Press and hold the Action Button on the left side of the phone.
- You will see an on-screen indication showing Silent mode on (bell icon with a line through it).
- You can also enable or disable Silent mode via Settings > Sounds & Haptics by toggling Silent mode on or off.
- Silent mode can also be controlled from the Control Center by tapping the bell icon.
Alternatively, use AssistiveTouch for silent mode toggling if you prefer:
- Enable AssistiveTouch in Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch.
- Use the virtual AssistiveTouch button, tap Device, then tap the bell icon to toggle silent mode.
Note: Even in Silent mode, alarms, music, and some app sounds may still play through the speaker. Also, Focus modes can silence calls and notifications beyond silent mode. This provides multiple ways to put an iPhone on silent depending on the model and user preference.
