Cold brew concentrate is just very strong cold brew that you dilute with water or milk when you’re ready to drink it. You only need coffee, cold water, a container, and something to strain with.
Basic ratio and ingredients
Use a strong ratio of about 1 part coarsely ground coffee to 4 parts cold water by volume (for example, 1 cup coffee to 4 cups water). This higher coffee-to-water ratio is what makes it a concentrate instead of ready‑to‑drink cold brew.
- 1 cup coarsely ground coffee
- 4 cups cold, preferably filtered, water
Step-by-step method
- Add the coffee grounds to a large jar, pitcher, or French press.
- Pour in the water, stirring well so all the grounds are saturated.
- Cover and let it steep 12–24 hours at room temperature or in the fridge; longer steeping gives a stronger concentrate.
- Strain through a fine-mesh sieve lined with a coffee filter, paper towel, cheesecloth, or a clean cloth; you can strain twice for a cleaner result.
How to use and dilute
Cold brew concentrate is usually diluted before drinking so it is not overly strong or bitter. Adjust the ratio to taste:
- Common starting point: 1:1 (equal parts concentrate and water or milk, plus ice).
- Stronger: 2:1 (two parts concentrate to one part water or milk).
- Weaker: more water or milk until it tastes right to you.
Storage and shelf life
Transfer the strained concentrate to a clean bottle or jar with a lid. Store it in the refrigerator and use within about 1–2 weeks for the best flavor.
Simple variations
- Use flavored beans (vanilla, hazelnut, etc.) for an easy twist.
- Add a splash of vanilla extract or simple syrup to the concentrate before chilling.
- Serve over ice with milk, cream, or a flavored creamer for an iced latte–style drink.
