To make a simple and effective gnat trap, use the following steps:
- Take a container or bowl and add about 2 cups of water.
- Add a few drops of liquid dish soap to break the surface tension of the water so gnats sink instead of float.
- In a smaller bowl or cup, place about 1/4 cup fresh fruit like banana or grapes (the fruit attracts the gnats).
- Put the smaller bowl inside the larger bowl with water.
- Cover the larger bowl tightly with plastic wrap and poke small holes (about pencil lead size) in the plastic wrap just above the smaller bowl's edge.
- Place the trap in gnat-prone areas like kitchen counters near fruit bowls.
- Change the fruit every 3 days to keep the trap effective.
Alternatively, an easy DIY trap uses a cut 2-liter bottle filled with apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap, inverted so gnats fly in but can't escape. These attract the gnats with fruit or vinegar scent, trap them with soapy water, and stop them from escaping through the small entry holes.
This method works well indoors to reduce and monitor gnat infestations.
