To leave a group chat on an iPhone, follow these steps:
- Open the Messages app and select the group chat you want to leave.
- Tap the group icons or the group name at the top of the screen to access the group details.
- Scroll down and tap "Leave this Conversation."
- Confirm by tapping "Leave this Conversation" again.
This will remove you from the group chat, and you will no longer receive messages from it
. Important conditions and notes:
- You can only leave a group chat if it has at least four participants (including you)
- Everyone in the group must be using Apple devices with iMessage enabled. If even one participant is on Android or using SMS/MMS, the "Leave this Conversation" option will be unavailable or grayed out
- If you cannot leave the group because of non-iPhone users, your alternative is to mute notifications by selecting "Hide Alerts" in the group details, so you won't be disturbed by messages
- If you want to stop receiving messages from a group with non-iPhone users, you may ask the group to start a new group chat without you or delete and block the conversation to prevent future messages
This method works on recent iPhone models and iOS versions, including iOS 17
