how often do the world athletics championships take place

The World Athletics Championships take place every two years (biennially). Initially, they were held every four years since their start in 1983, but since the 1991 event in Tokyo, they have been held on a biennial schedule in odd-numbered years to avoid clashing with the Olympic Games. There was a one- time exception when the 2021 championships were moved to 2022 due to the Covid pandemic and the rescheduling of the Tokyo Olympics.
