Prophet Muhammad is said to have had a total of 13 wives , although the status of two of them, Rayhana bint Zayd and Maria al-Qibtiyya, is sometimes debated as either wives or concubines. The title given to his wives is "Umm al-Mu'minin" (Mother of the Believers) out of respect. His first and only wife for many years was Khadija bint Khuwaylid until her death. After that, he married ten more women over time. At one point, he had up to nine wives alive simultaneously, which was before the divine limit of four wives was legislated in Islam. The commonly recognized wives include Khadijah, Sawdah bint Zam'ah, Aisha bint Abi Bakr, Hafsah bint Umar, Zaynab bint Khuzayma, Umm Salamah (Hind bint Abi Umayya), Juwayriya bint al-Harith, Zaynab bint Jahsh, Umm Habibah (Ramlah bint Abi Sufyan), Safiyyah bint Huyayy, and Maymunah bint al-Harith, among others.
