There are four main public universities in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa:
- Nelson Mandela University (NMU) in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha)
- Rhodes University in Grahamstown (Makhanda)
- University of Fort Hare (UFH) with its main campus in Alice and satellite campuses in Bhisho and East London
- Walter Sisulu University (WSU) with campuses in Mthatha, Butterworth, Buffalo City (East London), and Komani
These four universities are officially recognized and provide a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various faculties
