There are eight planets in our solar system. These are, in order from the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune
. The current definition of a planet by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) excludes Pluto, which was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006 because it has not cleared its orbital neighborhood
. Besides the eight planets, our solar system also contains five officially recognized dwarf planets: Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris
. Thus, the count of major planets is eight, with additional dwarf planets and smaller bodies making up the rest of the solar system.
