There are 8 planets in our Solar System. These are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. This count excludes dwarf planets like Pluto, which was reclassified in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) because it does not meet all the criteria of a full-fledged planet, primarily because it has not cleared its orbital neighborhood.
Beyond our Solar System, there are over 5,000 confirmed exoplanets orbiting other stars, and theoretically, there could be an immense, possibly infinite number of planets in the observable universe and beyond.
