The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks killed a total of 2,977 victims, excluding the 19 hijackers who also died in the attacks. This includes:
- Approximately 2,753 people who died at the World Trade Center in New York City, including 343 firefighters.
- 184 people killed at the Pentagon near Washington, D.C.
- 40 individuals who died in the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania.
The total death toll including the hijackers is 2,996. Thousands more were injured, and many first responders and survivors have suffered long-term health effects from exposure to toxic conditions at Ground Zero
