Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The official death toll, excluding the 19 hijackers, was about 2,977 people. This includes 2,753 victims at the World Trade Center, 184 at the Pentagon, and 40 near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where one of the planes crashed. Among the fatalities were 343 firefighters and numerous law enforcement officers and civilians. The youngest victim was 2 years old and the oldest was 85 years old. Thousands more were injured or later died from related illnesses linked to the attacks' aftermath.
