On January 6, 2021, an estimated 10,000 people broke through police barriers to enter the Capitol grounds. Of those, about 2,000 to 2,500 people entered the Capitol building itself during the attack, according to FBI estimates. These attendees were supporters of then-President Donald Trump, who had gathered in Washington, D.C. to contest the certification of the 2020 presidential election results. Many were involved in breaching security perimeters, vandalism, and assaults on police officers.
