The estimated number of people who perished in the North Tower of the World Trade Center when it collapsed on September 11, 2001, is approximately 1,600. Of these, between 1,344 and 1,426 were above the impact zone where American Airlines Flight 11 struck the tower between floors 93 and 99. Hundreds were killed instantly by the impact or the ensuing fires, while more than 800 people survived the initial crash but were trapped above the damaged stairwells and elevator shafts, ultimately perishing in the collapse or from smoke inhalation, fire, or falls. No one trapped above the impact zone survived, and some victims below the impact zone were also trapped and died
. In total, the World Trade Center complex saw 2,606 deaths, including civilians, firefighters, and law enforcement officers, but the North Tower alone accounted for the deadliest toll with around 1,600 fatalities
