On September 11, 2001, a total of 2,977 people died, excluding the 19 hijackers. This includes:
- 2,606 people who died in or around the Twin Towers in New York City.
- 125 people killed at the Pentagon.
- 246 passengers and crew aboard the four hijacked planes.
Among the victims were civilians, 343 firefighters, 71 law enforcement officers, and 55 military personnel. The youngest victim was a two-year-old girl, and the oldest was an 85-year-old man. Citizens of 77 different countries were among those who died.
