On September 11, 2001, a total of approximately 2,977 victims died as a result of the attacks, not including the 19 hijackers. The breakdown of the death toll is as follows:
- About 2,606 people died at the World Trade Center and the surrounding area in New York City, including 343 firefighters and 71 law enforcement officers.
- 125 people were killed at the Pentagon.
- All 246 passengers and crew aboard the four hijacked planes died.
- The youngest victim was 2 years old, and the oldest was 85 years old.
- The total number of people killed, including the hijackers, was about 2,996.
Most of those who died were civilians, with first responders and military personnel also among the casualties. The attacks affected people from many countries, with more than 90 nations losing citizens in the tragedy.
