Ed Gein killed two known women: Mary Hogan, a tavern owner who disappeared in 1954, and Bernice Worden, a hardware store owner who went missing in 1957. He admitted to these murders but also confessed to numerous grave robberies and exhumed bodies to use parts for making household items, clothing, and masks. There are suspicions he may have been involved in his brother's death, but this was ruled an accident. Gein was tried and found guilty of one murder but declared legally insane, spending the rest of his life in mental institutions until his death in 1984.
