Venice is made up of about 118 islands. These islands are separated by canals and connected by over 400 bridges. The exact number can vary slightly depending on what is considered an island, but the widely accepted count is around 118. Among these, only about 11 islands have permanent inhabitants. The main island of Venice itself consists of many small islands combined, and notable inhabited islands include Murano, Burano, Lido, and others. Many of the islands are connected by public ferry transport known as vaporetto.
