On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people died as a result of four coordinated terrorist attacks. The total death toll was 2,996 people including the 19 hijackers.
- 2,606 people died at the World Trade Center and surrounding area in New York City.
- 265 people died on the four hijacked planes (no survivors).
- 125 people died at the Pentagon.
- Most of those who died were civilians, along with 343 firefighters, 72 law enforcement officers, and 55 military personnel.
The attacks killed people from more than 90 countries, making it the deadliest terrorist attack in history.
