Humans have 46 chromosomes in total, organized into 23 pairs. Each pair includes one chromosome inherited from the mother and one from the father. Out of these 23 pairs, 22 pairs are called autosomes, which are the same in both males and females. The 23rd pair consists of the sex chromosomes, which determine an individual's biological sex: females typically have two X chromosomes (XX), and males have one X and one Y chromosome (XY).
