The number of bodies recovered from the 9/11 attacks varies by site:
- At the World Trade Center, 2,753 people were killed, but many bodies could not be fully recovered due to the intense fires that melted metal and reduced bodies to ash. More than 21,800 body parts and fragments were recovered, but as of 2011 only 1,632 victims had been fully identified through DNA profiling. Many remains were partial or fragmented due to the extreme conditions.
- At the Pentagon, about 184 victims died, and news reports from shortly after the attack indicated around 190 bodies had been found and removed from the damaged area.
- At the crash site in Pennsylvania, of the passengers of United Airlines Flight 93, only about 8% of human remains were recovered due to the high-speed impact explosion.
In total, nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks, with a significant number of bodies recovered but many remains were partial due to the nature of the disaster.
