The AP English Literature and Composition exam is 3 hours long in total. It consists of two main sections:
- Multiple-Choice Section: 1 hour long with 55 questions based on five prose and poetry passages. This section accounts for 45% of your overall exam score
- Free-Response Section: 2 hours long with three essay questions. These essays include analyzing a poem, a prose passage, and a literary argument based on a work of your choice. This section accounts for 55% of your overall exam score
You should pace yourself to spend about 1 minute per multiple-choice question and about 40 minutes on each essay during the free-response section
