The B-2 bomber has a top speed of about 1,010 km/h (628 mph), which is considered high subsonic—just under the speed of sound. This speed is optimal for its stealth mission rather than outright speed, as it is designed to penetrate enemy defenses rather than to fly very fast. Its cruising speed is around 900 km/h (560 mph) at 40,000 feet altitude. The B-2 uses four General Electric F118-GE-100 turbofan engines and has a range of roughly 6,000 nautical miles (11,000 km) unrefueled, or over 10,000 nautical miles with air refueling.
