Terry Fox ran a total of 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles) during his Marathon of Hope before he was forced to stop on September 1, 1980, outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario, due to the spread of cancer to his lungs
. He ran for 143 days, averaging close to a full marathon distance of about 42 kilometres (26 miles) each day through several provinces in Canada, including Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Ontario
