Braxton Hicks contractions can start as early as six weeks of pregnancy in almost invisible form, but most parents notice them in the second trimester, commonly around week 20 or later. They are more typical and noticeable during the third trimester, increasing in frequency as the pregnancy progresses. These contractions are irregular, usually mild, and not painful, serving as "practice" for the uterus to prepare for labor. They often last 15 to 30 seconds, sometimes up to two minutes, and tend to go away with rest or position changes. If contractions become regular, painful, or intense, that may signal true labor or require medical advice.
