P2, commonly known as Postinor-2, works primarily as an emergency contraceptive by delaying or preventing ovulation, which is the release of an egg from the ovary. If taken before ovulation, it prevents the egg from being released, thus sperm cannot fertilize it. If ovulation has already occurred, Postinor-2 can also interfere with the sperm's ability to meet the egg and may alter the uterine lining to prevent a fertilized egg from implanting. It is most effective when taken as soon as possible within 72 hours after unprotected sex and consists of two doses taken 12 hours apart. It is not an abortion pill and does not affect an established pregnancy.
