An Apple AirTag does not have a rechargeable battery and cannot be charged like typical electronic devices. Instead, it uses a user-replaceable CR2032 lithium 3V coin battery designed to last about a year before needing replacement

How to "Charge" (Replace) an AirTag Battery:

  1. Remove the Battery Cover
Press down on the polished stainless steel battery cover of the AirTag and rotate it counterclockwise until it stops rotating. Then remove the cover and the old battery
  1. Insert a New Battery
Insert a new CR2032 battery with the positive side facing up. You will hear a sound indicating the battery is connected
  1. Replace the Cover
Align the three tabs on the cover with the three slots on the AirTag, then rotate the cover clockwise until it stops and locks in place

Additional Notes:

  • When the AirTag battery is low, your iPhone will notify you, or you can check the battery status in the Find My app under the Items tab
  • Some CR2032 batteries with bitterant coatings may not work properly with AirTags, so use one compatible with Apple AirTag
  • Keep batteries and AirTag parts away from small children due to ingestion hazards

In summary, you do not charge an AirTag; you replace its battery approximately once a year by opening the back cover and swapping in a new CR2032 coin battery
