Shaka Zulu died by assassination on September 22, 1828. He was killed by his half-brothers Dingane and Mhlangana, along with an induna (advisor) named Mbopa. The assassination took place when most of Shaka's army was away on a military campaign, leaving the royal kraal vulnerable. Mbopa created a diversion while Dingane and Mhlangana struck fatal blows with spears. Shaka's body was then dumped into an empty grain pit which was filled with stones and mud to conceal his resting place. His assassination followed a period of erratic and brutal behavior after the death of his mother, which led to widespread fear and dissatisfaction among his people and close associates.
