Richard the Lionheart died in April 1199 after being wounded by a crossbow bolt during the siege of the castle at Châlus-Chabrol in the Limousin region of France. The bolt struck his left shoulder, and although initially considered a minor injury, the wound became gangrenous and led to his death on April 6, 1199
. The crossbowman who shot Richard was reportedly a young boy seeking revenge for the deaths of his father and brothers. Despite this, Richard forgave the shooter before he died and ordered him to be released with a sum of money
. Richard's death was painful and marked by infection (likely septicaemia). His body was buried at Fontevraud Abbey in France, his heart at the Cathedral of Rouen, and his entrails at the site of his death near Châlus
