Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes died in a car accident on April 25, 2002, in La Ceiba, Honduras, while on a spiritual retreat. She was driving a rented Mitsubishi Montero SUV when she swerved sharply to avoid an oncoming vehicle. This caused the car to lose control, hit two trees, and roll several times before coming to a stop in a ditch. Lopes was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle, suffering a fatal head injury-a catastrophic fracture at the base of the skull and open cerebral trauma. She died instantly at the age of 30. Other passengers were injured but survived
. Prior to her death, Lopes had also been involved in a tragic accident where a boy was fatally struck by a van driven by her assistant. Lopes cared for the boy and covered his medical and funeral expenses, but no blame was assigned to her party for that incident
. Her final days and the accident were documented in the VH1 film Last Days of Left Eye , which showed footage of her driving moments before the crash
. Lopes was buried at Hillandale Memorial Gardens in Stonecrest, Georgia.
