Heath Ledger died from an accidental overdose of prescription medications on January 22, 2008, at the age of 28. The toxic combination included painkillers and anti-anxiety drugs such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine. These substances combined caused his brain and brain stem to stop functioning, leading to his death. His death was ruled accidental by the New York City medical examiner's office, with no evidence indicating suicide or long-term drug addiction. Ledger had been struggling with insomnia and emotional distress following the breakup with his partner, which contributed to his self-medication with these drugs. He was found unresponsive in his Manhattan apartment by his housekeeper and masseuse, who unsuccessfully tried to revive him before emergency services pronounced him dead.
