Fred Hollows died on February 10, 1993, at the age of 63. The cause of his death was metastatic renal cancer, which primarily affected his lungs and brain. He was diagnosed with the cancer in 1987 and continued his work despite his illness until his passing. He died at his home surrounded by his family and close friends and was given a state funeral in Sydney. In accordance with his wishes, he was buried in Bourke, New South Wales, a place where he had worked closely with Indigenous Australian communities.
