Derrick Groves was caught after a nearly five-month manhunt following his escape from the Orleans Parish Justice Center in New Orleans on May 16, 2025. He was the last of 10 inmates who escaped through a hole behind a toilet. Groves was found hiding in a crawl space in a residence in southwest Atlanta after tips to Crime Stoppers and follow-up investigations led law enforcement there. His capture involved a standoff with police, during which SWAT teams deployed gas canisters multiple times to flush him out. A police dog eventually located him in the crawl space. No one else was present in the house at the time of his arrest. The arrest was made after coordinated efforts involving the U.S. Marshals, Atlanta Police Department SWAT, and other agencies.
