Tulip bulbs should generally be planted at a depth of about three times the height of the bulb. For most tulip bulbs, this means planting them around 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) deep. In cooler regions or for certain species, a depth around 10 cm (4 inches) is sometimes recommended, while larger bulbs in warmer regions or for perennializing may be planted a bit deeper, up to about 8 inches or slightly more. The bulbs should be planted with the pointed end facing upward. Planting deeper helps protect the bulbs from being dug up by squirrels and can improve perennial growth. Watering after planting is recommended to settle the soil around the bulbs.
