Lake Victoria has an average depth of about 40 meters (131 feet) and a maximum depth of approximately 82 to 84 meters (270 to 276 feet). The lake is relatively shallow compared to its large surface area, making it Africa's largest freshwater lake by area and the world's second-largest freshwater lake by surface area after Lake Superior.
