The Turks and Caicos Islands have a total land area of approximately 238 square miles (616 square kilometers) at high tide, and about 366 square miles (948 square kilometers) at low tide. The islands consist of two groups, the Turks Islands and the Caicos Islands, with the Caicos Islands being larger and more numerous. The total area including surrounding shallow water, known as the Caicos Bank, covers about 1,700 square miles (4,400 square kilometers), mostly shallow water and cays. The territory is characterized by its low-lying limestone islands with beautiful white sandy beaches.
