Saipan is approximately 20 kilometers (about 12.5 miles) long and 9 kilometers (about 5.5 miles) wide, with a total land area of around 115 to 122 square kilometers (44.5 to 47 square miles) depending on the source. It is the largest island of the Northern Mariana Islands in the Western Pacific Ocean. This size makes Saipan a relatively small island but significant as the most populous and principal island of the commonwealth, featuring varied geography including hilly areas and coastal inlets. Its population was around 43,385 in the 2020 census.
