Iran has a total land area of approximately 1,648,195 square kilometers (636,372 square miles). It is the 17th largest country in the world by geographic size and the second largest in the Middle East, after Saudi Arabia. In comparison, Iran is nearly as large as the state of Alaska, about one-sixth the size of the United States, about half the size of India, and roughly 80 times larger than Israel. It is the sixth-largest country entirely in Asia. The terrain includes rugged mountains and deserts, and the country shares borders with seven countries: Iraq, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Armenia.
