Your interests and your skills are not the same because they represent different aspects of your relationship with activities or topics:
- Interests are what you are naturally drawn to and what you enjoy or find engaging. They reflect your curiosity, passions, and what holds your attention or enthusiasm. Interests are often linked to your personality and what you find stimulating or meaningful.
- Skills, on the other hand, are learned abilities. They are the things you can do well because of practice, training, or experience. Skills represent proficiency or expertise in performing tasks or activities.
While interests can motivate you to develop skills, having an interest in something does not automatically mean you possess the skill to perform it well. Likewise, you might have skills in areas that do not particularly interest you, often acquired out of necessity or external demand rather than personal passion. In summary, interests are about what you enjoy or want to explore, and skills are about what you have learned to do effectively through effort and experience. This distinction explains why your interests and skills are often not the same.
