Cats can burp, but it is quite uncommon compared to humans and dogs. Burping in cats, known as eructation, happens when excess air is released from the stomach through the mouth, usually caused by swallowing air while eating or drinking quickly. Because cats primarily breathe through their noses, they tend to swallow less air, making burps rare and subtle—often sounding like a quiet gurgle or soft belch. Occasional burps in cats can happen, but regular or frequent burping may indicate underlying health issues such as gastrointestinal problems (acid reflux, esophagitis, inflammatory bowel disease), respiratory distress, or eating too fast. Open-mouth breathing or persistent burping should be checked by a veterinarian as it might signal serious health concerns. Overall, cat burps are much less common and less pronounced than in humans or dogs.
