Not all cats have toxoplasmosis. Cats are the only definitive hosts of the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which causes toxoplasmosis, but only a portion of cats become infected. The prevalence of infection in cats varies widely depending on their diet and environment, typically between about 20-60%, with feral and hunting cats more likely to be infected than indoor or strictly domestic cats. Most infected cats shed the infectious oocysts in their feces for a brief period (around 1-2 weeks) after their initial infection, and after that, they typically develop immunity and no longer shed the parasite. Therefore, while many cats may be exposed to or infected by the parasite during their lifetime, not all cats have toxoplasmosis at any given time, and many never show signs of illness from it.
