David Warner (1941–2022) was an English actor known for his extensive career in film, television, and theater, including notable involvement with the Doctor Who franchise. Although he never portrayed the Doctor in the official TV series, Warner played an alternate version of the Doctor in several Doctor Who audio dramas produced by Big Finish Productions, starting with the 2003 story Sympathy for the Devil. This version, known as the "Unbound Doctor," explored "what if?" scenarios and was characterized as more cautious and calculating but still retaining the Doctor's trademark charm and protectiveness. Warner's portrayal in these audios is highly regarded and considered by fans as one of the best Doctors never seen on television
. In addition to his audio work, Warner appeared on the TV series Doctor Who in 2013, guest-starring as Professor Grisenko in the episode "Cold War" (Series 7, Episode 9)
. Beyond Doctor Who , Warner had a prolific acting career with roles in films such as The Omen , Time Bandits , Titanic , and Mary Poppins Returns , as well as numerous stage performances
. Warner trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and had a career spanning six decades, earning accolades including a Primetime Emmy Award. He passed away in July 2022
