The capital of Brazil is Brasília. It has been the capital since its construction and inauguration in 1960, replacing Rio de Janeiro which was the capital from 1763 to 1960. Brasília was purpose-built to serve as a more central and regionally neutral federal capital and is known for its modernist architecture and urban planning, designed mainly by Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer. It is located in the Brazilian highlands in the country's Central- West region and has a population of about 2.8 million people.
