Dogs should not have almonds. Although almonds are not toxic to dogs, they pose multiple health risks. Dogs cannot properly digest almonds, which can lead to gastrointestinal distress such as vomiting, diarrhea, gas, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Almonds are also high in fat, which can cause pancreatitis—a serious inflammation of the pancreas. Moreover, almonds are a choking hazard and can cause obstructions in the esophagus, intestines, or windpipe, especially in small breeds. Seasoned almonds with salt, garlic, or onion powder can be even more harmful. Therefore, almonds are generally considered unsafe for dogs and are best avoided as part of their diet.
If a dog accidentally consumes a few almonds, it is recommended to monitor them closely for any signs of distress and contact a veterinarian if symptoms occur or if a large amount was consumed.
