Former MMA fighter and Olympic wrestler Ben Askren underwent a life- threatening health ordeal in mid-2025. He developed a severe bacterial infection that led to pneumonia, causing significant lung damage. During this period, Askren was hospitalized in Wisconsin and placed on a ventilator while waiting for a lung transplant. He revealed that at one point, his heart stopped about four times, with each stoppage lasting roughly 20 seconds, and that he was clinically dead before the transplant. Askren underwent a double lung transplant, which saved his life. After the surgery, he faced considerable physical challenges; he lost around 35 to 50 pounds and initially needed a walker to move around, unable to even lift a five-pound weight easily. Despite this, he expressed determination to work hard on his recovery and regain strength. He has spoken about the overwhelming support and love he received from fans and his community during this difficult time. As of August 2025, Askren has shown signs of recovery, including engaging in activities like playing disc golf with fellow MMA fighter Daniel Cormier. Although the recovery process is ongoing and demanding, Askren remains positive and committed to improving his health following the transplant and his near-death experience.
