Baby cockroaches, also called nymphs, are small versions of adult cockroaches that vary in appearance depending on their species and age. They generally range from about 3mm to 12mm in length. Newly hatched nymphs often appear white or light-colored before their exoskeleton hardens and darkens to brown, tan, or black as they mature. Unlike adults, baby cockroaches do not have wings and have a softer, more rounded body shape. They are quick, agile, and have long antennae and six spiny legs suited for scuttling. Common species of baby cockroaches differ in size and color: German cockroach nymphs start around 3mm with black and brown stripes, American cockroach nymphs start larger at about 5mm and range from reddish to grayish, and Oriental cockroach nymphs are reddish brown when young but darken to black. Baby cockroaches are usually found near food, moisture, and shelter and their presence indicates an established infestation with active reproduction. Baby cockroaches molt several times, shedding translucent skins called exuviae as they grow. Seeing different sizes of nymphs means the cockroach colony has been present for weeks or months. They can spread bacteria and allergens, posing health risks similar to adult cockroaches.
